FUN | THE MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE SPOTS IN BELFAST

Doesn’t being ‘locked in’ make you think of all the wonderful places on the outside? Like
many of my regular readers, I am forever on the lookout for insta-worthy backdrops, and it just so happens we're absolutely coming down with them in this part of the world! As I sit here in the midst of the #StayHome #StayAtHome CoVid19 pandemic, I am ever more appreciative of all our brill pic spots. From architecture and natural beauty to street art and glamorous hotels, we really are spoilt for choice. I could write a VERY long list, but I’ll try to limit it to just 10. Or maybe 15. Here goes! (In no particular order)…

Cathedral Quarter – there’s so much to choose from here, with pretty cobbled streets, beautiful architecture, character filled pubs (Duke of York & the Spaniard), the gorgeous Merchant Hotel with its regal entrance, and urban cafe culture (Established).

Street Art - Belfast is renowned for its murals and there are some spectacular options to pose by, whether you opt for the political or modern street art variety.

The Tropical Ravine, Botanic Gardens - with tropical plants, an alpine garden, waterfalls and sculptures, this is a lush spot for photographs. Literally.  (Also check out the Palm House just nearby, it makes for a stunning backdrop itself with its beautiful Victorian glass architecture)

St Anne's Square - a crisp modern backdrop of ivory architecture with dramatic pillars and iron railings to peek out behind, with St Anne's Cathedral in the background of course. Popular with fashionistas for good reason.

Stormont Park – the tree lined grounds at Stormont make a grand entrance to Stormont’s parliament buildings and close ups beside the statues or the masonry of the building make for great pics.

House Bar, Botanic – the indoor cherry blossom behind the bar here is a popular pic backdrop for ‘grammers, myself included. And there’s a myriad choice in beautiful panelled walls and rich fabric seating too, for other shots (bring extra light for the back corners though!). The cocktails are pretty and picture worthy too, by the way! I also like Perch Bar for a super pretty outdoorsy shot, and the Georgian doorways beside Margot in Donegall Square East work for me too.

PS – for the best real cherry blossom tree pics (mid-end April) I would suggest the ones in Fisherwick Church on Malone Road.

Queens University – the beautiful red colour and gothic architecture of Queens make for a super distinctive Belfast backdrop, and the quad plus its stairways leading back to Botanic are also pretty awesome. .. as are the multiple ornate doorways in College Square and the surrounding streets beside Queens. Oh, and last thing.. let’s not forget those columns at Elmwood Hall – a personal fave.

Titanic Belfast - the city's most popular tourist destination holds multiple photo opportunities, with striking architecture inside and out. Don't miss the neighbouring Titanic Hotel with its chequered floors and arched glass ceilings for some glamorous contrast!

The Crown Bar - a backdrop with true character, Belfast's landmark pub is beautiful inside and out, with elaborated antique decor, painted ceilings and mirrored booths.

Harland & Wolff - those big yellow cranes you can spot from just about anywhere in Belfast look even better a bit closer up. Find the best spots to shoot them from around Titanic Quarter.

Cave Hill - even if you don't want to explore the actual caves, the views from here are stunning – you can see as far away as Scotland on a clear day, as well as right across Belfast Lough to Scrabo Tower and the Mournes beyond, as well as down into the Lagan Valley.
Plus, it's a mighty fine walk that's easy to forget exists a stone's throw from the city.

Belfast Castle, at the bottom of the hill, is also nice, BUT there are lots of plastic Council signs and handrails/door markers etc which makes it kinda corporate. Easy to patch remove though, if you’re a whizz at photoshopping, which I am not!

Cafe Parisien - enjoy brunch while you capture views of the beautiful Belfast City Hall and bustling tree lined
streets from the restaurant balcony. I don’t love the new-ish balcony I have to say, I much preferred the open feel to the original balcony layout, but that’s just me. The interior is super stylish also, and the rounded banquette seat at Table 1 makes a great natural frame (but as the light is coming in the window, you’ll need extra light on your face, so get your friends’ phone torches on!)

And remember, if you're not so comfy on camera, step back from the close ups and ask a friend to photograph you in front of a fabulous background... this will detract some of the attention from you and make you feel less in the spotlight. Promise.

Of course there are gorgeous spots all over the country, which I'll focus on another day - please
do share your faves on insta & tag me @cathymartin or @thefwordsonline in your scenic selfies!

FILM / FOLIO | Box Sets Worth The Binge

At a time when many of us a. will be spending more time at home than usual and b. could use a little cheer - or at least a distraction, it seems apt to share a roundup of brilliant box sets worth the binge. I'd love to hear yours too, so please repost this on social with your favourites - and tag us so we can share your picks!

LOVE IS BLIND, Netflix

“I have met the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. I’ve never seen her before."

A kinda dating version of The Voice, this reality show features a bunch of singles who date in pods with a wall between them and get to know each other without knowing what they look like. Astoundingly, most fall in love within days, get 'blind engaged' and some even marry weeks later. The most entertaining part is watching how being on the outside affects their relationships, many of which unsurprisingly deteriorate. A compelling guilty pleasure watch!

NEXT IN FASHION, Netflix

If you liked Project Runway, you'll love this show hosted by Alexa Chung and Tan France, where 18 designers compete for the chance to win a cash prize and the opportunity to sell their line on Net-a-Porter. Some really impressive looks are the result!

SEX EDUCATION, Netflix

It may feature teens and have an American vibe, but this UK show is loved by all ages and is flippin’ hilarious. It features a virgin teenager who gives sex counselling to his fellow students for money, with tips gleaned from his actual sex therapist mother, the gorgeous Gillian Anderson. Graphic, not for the easily offended and funny, it's also very tender at times - and hugely entertaining.

YOU, Netflix

A New York bookstore manager and serial killer who falls in love with a poetic customer and quickly develops an extreme, toxic, and delusional obsession. He feeds his toxic obsession using social media and other technology to track her presence and remove 'obstacles' to their romance. At times disturbing, entertaining and addictive.

THE MORNING SHOW, Apple TV

Hugely entertaining show starring Jennifer Aniston as a news anchor whose life is turned upside down when her co-host, aka Steve Carell, is fired after being accused of sexual assault by a number of colleagues. With her own job potentially on the line, she faces rivalry from local reporter played by Reece Witherspoon.

THE CROWN, Netflix

The Crown tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world - Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street - and the intrigues, love lives and complexity behind them. Absolutely fantastic and a visual delight.

LIAR, ITV Hub

A psychological thriller about two people whose initial attraction leads to far-reaching consequences for all involved. Things escalate after a teacher dates a recently widowed surgeon and quickly spiral out of control, ultimately exposing the power of truth, deception and trust.

THE STRANGER, Netflix

This superb thriller follows a family whose secrets and lies are made public by a complete stranger, creating mayhem in the lives of all involved and leading to an entangled mystery in the search for answers.

CHEER, Netflix

A documentary series following the world of competitive cheerleaders from the 14-time National Champions at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. They deal with injuries, sacrifices and personal setbacks leading up to the championship competition.

Ozark, Netflix

Can't wait for season three of this series (late March) as it follows a financial adviser forced to take his family away from their Chicago hometown of Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he must launder $500 million in five years for a drug boss, or else. Incredible acting and a must watch.

FUN | Top of the Podcasts

Podcasts have rocketed in popularity and become one of my favourite things to listen to, I’m even in a podcast club, albeit with friends who seem obsessed with the killer/crime podcasts out there! For the record, I’m not. I kinda feel like I’m back in the 1980s and 90s and all the cool people like Bowie and I like Madonna and Britney and Kylie; I like to listen  to learn, to get completely lost or just have a good old giggle. The best thing about them is that, unlike YouTube or Instagram, you don't have to look at a screen to enjoy podcasts - and you can easily listen on the go, whether walking, running, driving, cooking or doing housework.

It blows my mind that in this day and age we have access to such a wealth of information where us mere mortals have the opportunity to tap into the knowledge and experience of experts who have spent a lifetime crafting their skills. It almost seems rude not to oblige.

Some podcasts are best followed sequentially to follow a story, like Serial - the investigative journalism podcast that introduced many of us to this medium in the first place. In the most part, I tend to dip in and out of episodes that interest me the most - while others I listen to religiously on repeat.

Here are five of my must-listen favourites... go download, enjoy and thank me later.

The High Low

Pandora Sykes and Dolly Alderton’s High Low has charmed millions of listeners globally as the posh duo discuss the trivial and the political in a manner akin to two mates chatting in the pub. Refreshingly down to earth and witty - if you only download one podcast, make it this one.

Don't miss: Digital Etiquette (& why we need it) and Male vs Female Vanity

How to Fail

A celebration of our shortcomings and imperfections, How to Fail is a reminder that it’s our failures which shape us the most. Hosted by journalist, Elizabeth Day, weekly guests impart wisdom on their personal challenges on the journey to success. Feel good, vulnerable and honest.

Don't miss: Phoebe Waller-Bridge on personal failures and how Fleabag came into existence.

The Science of Success

The No.1 Evidence Based Growth Podcast, Science of Success is about learning how we can become better versions of ourselves by exploring ways to improve decision-making, understand our minds and psychology, through interviews with leading experts and thought leaders. Seriously inspirational stuff.

Don't miss: the fabulous Dr Brené Brown on why vulnerability is not weakness.

Feel Better Live More.png

Feel Better, Live More

The number one health podcast in the UK hosted by Dr Chatterjee, a medical doctor of 16+ years, who believes we have over complicated health and wants to simplify it by focusing on food, movement, sleep and relaxation. Truly inspirational listening that offers a fresh perspective on health and wellbeing.

In his own words: "My goal is to empower you to become the architect of your own health. I believe that when we are healthier, we are happier because when we feel better, we live more."

Don't miss: Is there anything better than movement for transforming the way that you feel.

Happy Place

Fearne Cotton talks to incredible people about life, love, loss and everything in between - ultimately, what happiness means to them. Universally relatable, uplifting and sincere, it offers an insight into less openly talked about issues like mental health in the public eye. Plus Fearne is just adorable.

Don't miss: Fearne's interview with Katie Piper in front of a packed audience at Happy Place Live.

FUN | Bestselling Books 2019

Hands up if you'd like to read more in 2020? One of the easiest yet most rewarding New Year resolutions to implement, I've already got the bug and have a To Read list as long as my arm. Not sure where to start? Take a look at the Top 5 best selling books of 2019, compiled from a cross section of lists including Amazon, Waterstones and The Sunday Times.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse - Charlie Mackesy

If you don't already follow @charliemackesy on Instagram, treat yourself... his account is beautiful and full of heartfelt everyday inspiration. If you love that, you'll adore his recently published book, already a Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller. Described as 'a book of hope for uncertain times' and 'the new Winnie the Pooh', it recounts conversations between four unlikely friends with beautiful illustrations and simple, poignant messages. Charlie's words and pictures already hang on hospital walls and have been turned into wall art and tattoos. His book is loved by humans of all ages from children to adults and rightly so.

Pinch of Nom, Kay Featherstone + Kate Allinson.jpg

Pinch of Nom: Everyday Light - Kate Allinson and Kay Featherstone

Everyday Light, the second cookbook from Pinch of Nom, is packed with 100 brand new delicious everyday recipes, featuring family favourites and speedy midweek meals. Almost half are vegetarian and all come in under 400 calories. I'm loving the sound of Pizza Loaded Fries and Firecracker Prawns... if any of my friends fancy giving them a whirl?!

The Family Upstairs - Lisa Jewell

Lisa Jewell ventures into psychological thriller territory in her latest novel, a compulsive read featuring two entangled families and a house full of secrets - with multiple storylines, an unreliable narrator, a sociopath, several mysteries and many murders. Both menacing and compelling, let's just say there’s a whole lot going on!

Veg, Jamie Oliver

Jamie's latest cookbook includes every recipe from his Channel 4 series, Meat Free Meals, with a tonne of vibrant, flavoursome inspo. Aimed at anyone who wants to embrace the odd meat-free day, lives a vegetarian lifestyle, or just fancies trying some new lush flavour combinations. Roasted Tomato Risotto with fennel, crispy thyme, garlic, vermouth and parmesan - YES PLEASE! Ditto Aubergine Lasagne with sweet tomato sauce and a cheese & almond crunch. This is actually making me hungry...

The Activity Journal, Mrs Hinch

Described as a book shaped slice of you time, Mrs Hinch's Activity Journal is all about taking time out of busy lives to relax, de-stress and plan with a series of fun activities. Penned by the hugely popular 'cleaning goddess' who rose to fame on Instagram by posting about her daily cleaning regimes and currently has 3 million followers in her #HinchArmy - that's more than Kylie! Not sure this one would be my cup of tea tbh but one heck of a lotta people love it!

FUN | Five Books Worth Reading

Does anyone ever feel that they don’t read enough anymore?! Like, proper reading? Besides emails, Instagram captions and the news headlines. Every time I get lost in a great book, I vow to do so more often. The ultimate form of escapism - and often, learning - it really does have to be one of the great pleasures in life, yet it's so easy for our To Read pile to slip to the bottom of our To Do pile.

And not only is it good for our minds, reading can actually make us better leaders - here are five reasons every leader should be a reader:

1.      Reading makes us better THINKERS. It’s one of the most efficient ways to acquire information and leaders need a lot of general information to keep perspective and seize opportunities.
2.      Reading upgrades our people skills. It can help us better identify with people and boost our emotional IQ.
3.      Reading improves our COMMUNICATION. Combined with improved emotional IQ, reading expands our vocabulary to choose persuasive words and motivate behaviour.
4.      Reading helps us RELAX. Its proven to lower stress levels, which is an ongoing struggle for today’s leaders.
5.      Reading keeps us YOUNG. It has been proven to help prevent dementia and sharpen our mental capacity in later years.

I've rediscovered my love for reading lately (a looming dry January and no WiFi for 3 weeks over Christmas helped lol!) and have definitely got the bug again... if you haven't picked up a book for a while, I highly recommend carving out the time to do so. Put your phone on silent, switch off Netflix or go to bed half an hour earlier - it really is so worth it.

Here are five fantastic reads to get you started.

The Family Upstairs - Lisa Jewell

Master of chilling suspense, Lisa Jewell brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets. A captivating, unsettling and atmospheric psychological thriller about dysfunctional family dynamics.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris

A vivid, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful re-creation of Lale Sokolov's experiences as the man who tattooed the arms of thousands of prisoners with what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is also a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions.

This is Going to Hurt - Adam Kay

A first-hand account of life as a junior doctor in all its joy, pain, sacrifice and bureaucracy, and a love letter to those who could one day be holding our lives in their hands. A genuinely funny collection of stories and a unique insight into the NHS - heart warming, hilarious and devastating all at once. (Probably not one for the squeamish).

The Heart's Invisible Furies - John Boyne

Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do, eccentric Dublin couple, Cyril is anchored by his heartfelt friendship with glamorous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. An intensely emotional, mesmerising family saga told over seven decades and brimming with live, joy, pain and forgiveness.

The New Fashion Rules - Victoria Magrath

If you fancy a slightly lighter read, this is a fascinating insight into the constantly evolving world of fashion and social media by one of the most influential bloggers around, Victoria Magrath aka In the Frow. Right up my street for obvious reasons and I nod along and smile every time I pick it up - a great coffee table book to dip in and out of.

A few others that I love include:

Bill Bryson, The Body – This is a massively fascinating book on how our body works, down to the cellular level. (I have had to read certain chapters and paragraphs over and over again, because it does get detailed, but it is truly awesome and makes me want to go back and study medicine or biology all over again)

Michelle Obama, Becoming – Read this and join the ‘Michelle for President’ movement!

Fashionopolis, Dana Thomas – Get woke on fast fashion and the climate crisis. Scary biscuits!

Liver Detox, Anthony William (The Medical Medium). Another fascinating one. I am a wee bit obsessed with @medicalmedium on Instagram – and if you want to kick start your health or help yourself heal from inflammation or illness, his advice is a great starting point.

Angela's Ashes the Musical

Grand Opera House, Belfast

3-7 September

I absolutely loved and loathed Angela’s Ashes at school. And I only loathed it because of my own discomfort (and perhaps immaturity in dealing with) some of the hardships. The beautifully told story returns in this major musical adaptation of Frank McCourt’s memoir and I can’t wait to see it. The story is brought to life in an emotional telling of a childhood in Limerick and beyond, featuring songs and melodies with a rare lyricism and a warm sense of humour.

Proclaimers

Belfast Waterfront Hall

Sunday 8 September

No need to walk 500 miles to see these talented Scottish twins, as The Proclaimers take the stage in Belfast Waterfront Hall. The pair's enduring appeal across generations has carved a niche where pop, folk, new wave and punk collide in sing-along raucousness.

Strangford Seafood Supper Club

Castle Ward, National Trust, Strangford

19 September

The first ever Castle Ward Supper Club takes place during Seafood September and features my chum Comber born chef, Will Brown, cooking with stunning local seafood ingredients from around Strangford Lough. A shared table setup in the NT's intimate candle-lit space, with the chef on full view and explaining each of their courses as they go along. Price includes a complimentary cocktail on arrival... But it’s BYO, so bring a bottle of your favourite tipple.

FUN | KELLYS PORTRUSH CELEBRATES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

- “LIVE AT THE BEACH PORTRUSH”- KELLYS PORTRUSH CELEBRATES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY YEAR WITH NORTHERN IRELAND’S BIGGEST EVER BEACH FESTIVAL!-

beach party.jpeg

Northern Ireland’s biggest and best beach festival has just been announced to take place this summer as the world’s hottest DJs join the Ulster Orchestra to mark 50 years of partying in Portrush - all thanks to Kellys and Lush!

Kellys Portrush/Lush! have announced plans for an all-new 12,000 capacity Beach Festival in their spiritual home of Portrush this summer and we can’t wait!
Following the overwhelming success of the sell-out Lush! Classical shows at the SSE Arena Belfast and Ebrington Square, Derry/Londonderry for the Clipper Yacht Race celebrations, Lush! are now taking things to the next level with their Biggest classical show to date...taking the ‘Lush Classical’ concept outdoors with the North Coast’s stunning coastline as its backdrop. The event is in celebration of Kellys 50th year providing top-class entertainment for music fans across Northern Ireland…bringing it home to Portrush… can you imagine a better Summer evening?!

Lush! Classical Live at the Beach will be staged on August 10, 2019, at Portrush’s famous East Strand and will feature some of the hottest dance acts on the planet collaborating with Northern Ireland's most accomplished classical musicians. The event is part of a three-day music festival event in partnership with LSFX Productions.

For generations of music-fans in Northern Ireland, Kellys in Portrush has always been synonymous with the biggest stars of the local and international dance scene filling the floors every weekend for the most enthusiastic revellers. We all remember uni nights spent dancing the night away in Kellys.

The newly revamped Kellys venue is also renowned for innovation and pushing the boundaries of genre, while pioneering new forms of dance music.

Despite the fact it’s celebrating 50 years providing top class entertainment, for 2019, the team at Kellys is planning the biggest and best celebration to date.

The Lush! Classical Live at the Beach event will see a 55-piece Ulster Orchestra, produced by Kylie Minogue’s musical director Steve Anderson combined with the genius of DJ and musical producer, Dave Seaman and featuring ‘Ibiza’s favourite saxophone player’ Lovely Laura and Maria Nayler. The event has capacity for 12,000 music fans -making it the biggest ever outdoor Classical dance event in Northern Ireland estimated at contributing more than £1.8million to the local economy.

Special guests include Seb Fontaine, Tall Paul, K Klass, Ben Santiago, Dee Montero and Junior J and tickets are expected to sell out quickly for what’s set to be Northern Ireland’s biggest ever beach party.

Peter Wilson (48) is the second generation of his family to take over running Kellys, originally set up by his late uncle James Kelly in 1969.

What started as a cowshed for staging barn dances 50 years ago has developed into one of the best-known nightclubs in Europe and this summer’s event will the most ambitious to date.

“This is going to be a golden year for Kellys as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, so we really wanted to pull out all the stops and give our loyal fans the party of their life,” Peter said.

FUN | GALENTINES - THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR FRIENDS IN BELFAST

VALENTINES/SCHMALENTINES….

If you’re single this Valentine’s Day, and in fact, even if you’re not, why not celebrate the love of your friends and catch up in the city with some fun things to do?  This weekend I’m hosting the Cathedral Quarter’s inaugural Galentine’s event at the Merchant Hotel with some of my friends including Paddy McGurgan, Tiffany Brien and Fiona McCartan (Gluten Free Fi) and it inspired me to go seeking out some fun things to do with my gal-pals. Here are my top ten…

  1. THEATRE DAHLING!

Take in a show at the MAC, The Lyric or The Grand Opera House. Each of these venues provides a fab backdrop and interesting architecture as well as the shows on the stage. At The MAC, “Ubu the King” is grotesque, gruesome and hilariously absurd. Inspired by Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi, which caused a riot in Paris in 1906, Tinderbox Theatre Company dares to bring the primal monster to life through a succulent feast of sheer inventiveness and fearless theatricality. A feast for the wicked.

At the Lyric, Michael Cameron’s ‘RUBY!’ celebrates the life of popular 1950s singer Ruby Murray, who hailed from Belfast but enjoyed global fame as she became the only recording artist in history to have five songs in the Top Twenty in the same week. But there is more to life than pop songs it seems…

And down at The Opera House, the international, award-winning smash-hit musical based on the blockbuster film, THE BODYGUARD is back and features  three-time Brit nominee and X-Factor winner, Alexandra Burke.  Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron (Burke)  from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge – what they don’t expect is to fall in love.

 2. ARTY MARTY:

I recently saw the Leonardo DaVinci exhibition at the Ulster Museum, which is awe-inspiring when you think just how influential he has been on modern art and science, among other subjects….. but there is also a Game of Thrones Tapestry exhibition on at the Museum too. Weaving the story from Seasons 1 to 7, this impressive tapestry gives Game of Thrones® fans the perfect chance to reminisce over all the action that led to the finale of Season 7, with further panels depicting the story of Season 8 due to be added to the tapestry in June 2019. And even if you’re not a GOT fan, feel some pride in the fact that it was designed locally by hand but woven by a state-of-the-art machines and hand finished in Northern Ireland. The linen used to form the background of the tapestry has been sourced from Ferguson’s Irish Linen, one of the last surviving linen mills in Ireland – and as a former marketeer of Irish Linen, I am intrigued to see this piece of work.

There are lots of other galleries and art-filled places to see in the city too – and a personal fave of mine is at the Ulster University art/textiles students’ shop at the Belfast campus too.

3.  BRUNCH BUNCH

I haven’t even been here yet and I’m recommending it; such is my trust in so many foodie friends’ judgement. Brunch at Freight Belfast – formerly Pot, Kettle, Black - is reputedly delicious with a capital D.  Located in the C.S. Lewis Square in east Belfast, five converted shipping containers house one of Belfast’s most talked about eating spots and I am most definitely making a date to eat there this weekend myself.

Another great brunch venue, but back in the city centre, is AM:PM. Positioned at the epicentre of all that happens in Belfast both literally and metaphorically, AM:PM is unique, quaint, chic, cosy, opulent, and funky. These descriptions almost-but-not-quite describe how fab this place is. You will find the shabby chic rubbing shoulders with the classically demur.

Brunch or lunch at Café Parisien is definitely dining with a view, although I’d recommend it anytime from dawn ‘til dusk for the truly wonderful French cuisine – from delicious morning crepes to bistrot dishes and succulent steak au poivre. And the house wine isn’t bad either!

Finally, Brunch at Babel in Builltt Hotel’s rooftop bar and garden offers panoramic city views, mouth-watering cocktails and delicious food. Accessed via its own entrance on Ann Street side of the hotel. Babel’s creative shrub cocktails use ingredients and garnishes inspired by its living walls which contain over 300 plants. Babel prides itself on its home grown botanicals, subtle sophistication and innovative ideas. If you’re tee-total, it’s important to note that Bullitt serves arguably the best coffee in the city, if you’re an aficionado like that…

4.  ON YER BIKE:

For some physical activity, why not hire Belfast Bikes or let your feet do the talking and take to the towpath or the seafront paths – breathing in some fresh air while you’re at it. If the weather’s bad (and it’s kinda likely, considering this is Ireland) then pop into Flow Yoga studio in Hill Street for a stretch and some zen time.

5.  SHOP TIL YA DROP!

Visit Victoria Square, CastleCourt, Donegal Place and out of town areas like the Lisburn Road or  Bloomfield Avenue are great places to soak up some retail therapy.

6.  MANI/PEDI/SPA DATE

My personal favourite in the city for a girlie get together, spa-style, is the Merchant Hotel Spa, where the therapists are highly trained and super knowledgeable. Plus, the sauna and relaxation areas are perfect places to really get away from it all. But having said that, there are loads of great salons and spas across the city, and getting a booking for a group shouldn’t be to hard if you plan in advance.

7. JUNGLE BOOGIE:

Be a tourist in your own city and take a tour of The Tropical Ravine and The Palm House in Botanic Gardens. The Palm House contains a range of tropical plants, hanging baskets, seasonal displays and birds of paradise, and is one of the earliest examples of a Victorian style glasshouse made from curved iron and glass. The building was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, who also helped design parts of nearby Queen's University. Across the paths lies the Tropical Ravine, which contains some of the oldest seed plants around today, as well as banana, cinnamon, bromeliad and orchid plants. The listed building dates back to 1887 and has been restored with many of its original Victorian features reinstated and preserved. The ravine is split over two levels with an open reception area on the ground floor, and the building has been modernised to make it more energy efficient with new triple-glazed windows installed to retain heat and create the right environment for the tropical plants it is home to. Visitors can learn about the conservation work and plant collection through interactive and digital exhibits. And, final point on both these places? They’re both fab backdrops for insta-perfect pics!

8.  COFFEE AND CAKE:

I’d recommend Patisserie Valerie on Donegall Square West, where you can enjoy the unique café atmosphere including the now famous Toulouse-Lautrec style cartoons by Terron. In their havens of self-indulgence, you will discover only the best quality cakes and patisserie, continental breakfasts, lunches, the finest teas and coffees and an atmosphere that is unique to each location. Across the road, Hotel Chocolat offers wonderous chocolate treats and hot chocolate drinks while out of town and up the Lisburn Road, you’ll find Miel et Moi, which is inspired by classical French patisseries… This truly is a little bit of Parisian Paradise in the city with its enchanting afternoon teas, delicious dishes, scrumptious cakes and delightful cocktails.

patisserie valerie.jpg

Even though I rarely eat bread and cakes myself, the ultimate afternoon tea experience for me is at the Merchant Hotel. Set in the sumptuous splendour of The Great Room Restaurant, Afternoon Tea in The Merchant Hotel is a truly elegant and utterly delicious experience not to be missed.  Complete with a bottle of Krug Champagne and Royal Beluga Caviar, it really is the height of indulgent luxury.

9.  MAKE ME UP:

A group lesson or make up application at Paddy McGurgan’s Make Up Pro store is the perfect experience for anyone who wants to gain an insight into their own makeup routine or just get ready for a night out with friends.

makeuppro1.jpg

10. COCKTAILS:

The Perch Rooftop Bar is located on the fifth floor of a historic building and has a beautiful large centre bar, surrounded by original window features, original brick clad walls and adorned, of course, with birdcages and similarly themed artwork lending itself to the name. Nip up in the original sliding door lift and find yourself looking over the sights of Belfast whilst sipping a cocktail in the outdoor area or take a perch at the bar and sample some delicious beer and gins.

FUN | WHITE WALKERS SIGHTED IN WESTEROS - WINTERFELL FESTIVAL, CASTLE WARD

Earlier this week, I sent our summer intern (and GOT fan) Laura Gilmore to The National Trust’s Castle Ward in County Down, where she was immersed into the fantasy world of the global phenomenon Game of Thrones ahead of the Winterfell Festival in September. Check out her story here:

Having gained global recognition as the filming location for Winterfell, House of Stark, in series one of the popular HBO programme, Castle Ward is now the location for Ireland’s only Game of Thrones inspired festival. This year, Winterfell Festival will be held at Castle Ward on Sunday 16 September 2018, where the historic estate, cared for by the National Trust, will be transformed into Winterfell, home of the Stark family for one day only.

castlewardGameofThronesHelenSloanHBO.jpg

I set off for the regal location from Belfast and was transported into a veritable fantasy land…. After being appropriately suited and booted in GOT attire, I had the pleasure of joining the Stark family at Audley’s Castle, on the beautiful shores of Strangford Lough, for a glorious banquet lunch.  Following this, we took part in a sword fighting masterclass and tried our hand at archery. Each activity was taken by a team of extremely talented and well-trained actors, fully dressed in costume and playing the part to perfection! In-between each activity, the Stark family also explained the intricacies of the set and filming, actors, costumes, and the fantastic tourist pull GOT has created for Northern Ireland. It was immersive and experiential at its best and I LOVED it!

Last year’s event drew thousands of people to the shore of Strangford Lough and this year’s festival has even bigger appeal with a gripping event story line that sees the residents of Winterfell living under a cloud of fear as White Walkers approach the wall.

Through theatrical re-enactments, ticket holders will experience a Winterfell where tensions are high as tales of ancient peoples, once thought extinct, rattle the residents. Throughout the day actors will play the roles of central Game of Throne characters, recreating scenes from George R. R. Martin’s novels at various locations around the estate. Meet The Hound and learn how to wield a sword; see if you can solve Kimmick, Bard to Lord Stark’s riddles; watch Maester Luwin perform a medical demonstrations; hear King Robert regale tales of the Nights’ Watch and follow Jon Snow to Castle Black, avoiding White Walkers as you go.

Visitors can join the crowds and soak up the atmosphere at the King’s Tournament Games where skilled horse riders will perform enthralling film-set stunts and tricks fit for entertaining royalty. Full contact jousting, sword fighting and falconry will add to the atmosphere, creating an unforgettable event.

On the day you’ll experience the sights, sounds and smells of a medieval village and watch skilled blacksmiths, silversmiths, weavers and armourers at work. You will also have the chance to meet Armourer Boyd Rankin (Mikken in Game of Thrones) who will be showcasing a selection of the swords he forged for Game of Thrones.

Day tickets for Winterfell Festival cost £25 with access to a full programme of events and entertainment including theatrical performances, live jousting, falconry, archery, a medieval village and Dire Wolves… Yes, you can meet the actual dogs who p…

Day tickets for Winterfell Festival cost £25 with access to a full programme of events and entertainment including theatrical performances, live jousting, falconry, archery, a medieval village and Dire Wolves… Yes, you can meet the actual dogs who played Summer and Grey Wind in the TV show as they will also be making a special appearance.  The Starks’ Grey Wind and Summer are known as Odin and Thor in the real world and are the closest thing to real wolves you’ll ever meet!

Festival goers who purchase an additional ‘meet the actor’ ticket, will have the opportunity to join an intimate audience with stars from the Game of Thrones TV series. Details of the actors and the tickets for this additional element of the festival will be announced later this summer.
